Monster Crochet

This website cracks me up. If you prefer that your crocheted objects don't stare at you with monstrous eyeballs, then you can skip it. But this designer, Regina Gonzalez, has some of the most creative and hilarious crocheted objects I have ever seen. And her patterns are awesome. Seriously.

Poultry, vegetables (Vegetable Liberation Army), CSI: Humpty Dumpty, oh, I could go on, but you just need to go and see for yourself.

Thanks to a new customer for letting me know about this site.

Dorkishness Revealed

Yesterday, I led half of the Hemlock knitters astray, and I must confess before you get any farther. Knitting in the front & back is NOT the same as K1, P1 into the same stitch.

Sigh.

Sorry. E-mail or call me or come by if you need more explanation.

Fun for Young and Old

Lee, pictured here, suggested I take a picture of the youngest and oldest people in attendance at SNB last night. Lee is 80 years proud, and Rhiannon is 10.

Spinning Group

I PROMISE to have a spinning class scheduled soon! It will be in March. Until then, however, many of us who have taken up spinning (or would like to in the near future) would like to meet, visit, and share knowledge. So I'm adding a spinning group to the schedule.

Tuesdays from 2-5 in the afternoon, bring your wheel or drop spindle.

Who can think of a good caption for this picture?

Crochet Guild

The Wichita chapter of the Crochet Guild of America - KS My Stitch, meets at Twist!

They meet the third Monday of each month. The morning group meets from 10 a.m. to noon, and the evening group meets from 6:30 to 8:30. Each meeting costs $1.50 to attend.

Visit the group's blog and find out what they're all about! Our very own crochet instructor, Tamara, is President this year. Rosina, Vice President, and Cori, Secretary are great people whom we often see in the shop and love visiting with.

We're really pleased to host this group!

Knit Lit

Michelle Calhoun will host a monthly gathering of folks interested in listening to
literature while knitting. We're calling it Knit Lit.

The readings will either be pre-recorded (like an audiobook) or read aloud, and
will be knitting-themed. Material will be essays, short stories, or other
selections that will fit into our 2-hour time slot. If there's a lot of interest,
we'll start meeting bi-weekly or weekly, and move into longer works, such as
novels.

Knit Lit is the Third Saturday of each month, and starts next month (February
16th). 4-6 pm.

First Care Package

Our first care package is leaving for Iraq today. We've adopted a platoon of 25 soldiers stationed there until December of 2009. (See the January Newsletter for more details.)

Thanks to Pam, Pattie, and JoDeen for contributing to this package! The next one is going February 1st. I'd especially like to gather shaving cream (not in aerosol containers) and moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and soaps.

If you'd like to knit or crochet for our platoon, warm hats in dark colors would be appreciated (black, dark brown, dark green.)

Knit Oblique!

Another Knit-Along! (Are we crazy?! No, we just want to have a variety of KAL choices, because it's always more fun to knit with friends!)

Oblique is this lovely cardigan designed by Veronik Avery. You can find the pattern and yarn requirements on knitty.com. When I e-mailed Veronik for permission to use her pattern, this is what she said:
I'm flattered that you're interested in starting a knit-along for
Oblique - of course you have my permission. I'll watch your blog with
interest and I'll put a link to your store very soon. Your website
looks great!

Thank you, and please let me know if I can be of any help.

Veronik
Okay, I haven't quite recovered from hearing from two design superstars in one week.

We think that Cascade's Eco Wool would be a good choice for this cardigan, or another similar chunky yarn.

Meetings for Oblique will be once a month, on the second Thursday from 4-6pm. If you can't make it that early in the afternoon, don't worry. Just come by after work. If it goes on into the evening, so be it. We'll start February 14th.

Hemlock Knit-Along

Announcing a new Knit-Along! The Hemlock Ring Blanket, designed by Jared Flood of the Brooklyn Tweed blog. (We've listed him in our "Favorite Blogs" section at the left.) Jared kindly gave permission for us to use his pattern in our KAL. We'll meet on the last Saturday of each month from 4-6 in the afternoon. Download the pattern from Jared's site, print it, and join us on January 26th for the first meeting.

Get On Your Toes!

It's time for a sock-of-the-month club!
It's called On Your Toes, and involves buying a card that gets punched each month - the punch gets you 15% off your purchase of sock pattern and yarn. Each month we'll announce the Sock of the Month, and we'll post the supplies that qualify for the discount. When you bring in your completed socks, you get a stitch marker.

Here's the card and the January stitch marker (no sock for January, just the prize for signing up):

The marker is made with nylon-coated stainless steel - won't scratch your needles, and no ends or openings to snag your yarn. The sock says, "OYT '08."
